- A mummy is preserved corpse. Some are reanimated becoming shambling corpses.
Mummies are not capable of speech. The mummies (and golems) in the snake mound in Benin are mummy-like figures in contorted poses. They were put in place to guard the inner wheel of the mound, coming to life if the passage to the tomb are opened. They cannot be injured with weapons, as they are already dead. When the inner door is closed again, they become inanimate.
