Background[]

The ancestral castle of the Knight/Ritter family in Rittersberg was built in 1223, and the base of operations of the Schattenjäger.

Because of the loss of the Talisman, the decline of the Ritter family was reflected on the castle as well. During the time of Wolfgang Ritter, the castle was troubled by financial difficulties and the castle as well as the town around it were in decline.

The castle was in need for repairs. Perhaps because of some settling of the foundations, wide seams gaped between rocks. Outside, the stones were weathered and coated with moss. Inside the situation was no better, although some attempts were made to keep the moss at bay.

The interior of the castle showed signs of sacking to compensate for the property taxes. The hall was spartan with a few lonely plain pieces of furniture; the walls were empty save for a few historical weapons; there were no rugs on the floor. It was drafty, with poor lighting, and most of the rooms were locked.[1]

Wolfgang received offers to open the castle, for tourists; but he declined.

Sins of the Fathers[]

At the time Gabriel traveled to the castle, Rittersberg was suffering from strange weather phenomena in June, causing castle and surrounding area to have winter-style weather. No one knew why the weather was so strange. But it might have had something to with the Ritter curse.
