Crodwell was the Mayor of Charleston when the ritualistic murders occurred. He owned the slave girl Eliza. He realized soon that the witch-hunter Gunter Ritter was attracted to her, and after 6 weeks of his arrival, he reprimanded him for his ineffectiveness. Soon Gunter uncovered the coven that committed the murders. Although Gunter saved the witch, who was Tetelo, Crodwell suspected and arrested her. Despite Gunter's protests, he proceeded to burn the slaves at the stake.
